The Emperor of the Moon

Thu, June 15, 2017 @ 7:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)
Thu/Fri/Sat, Jun 15–17 & 22–24

Our first-ever outdoor show will take place this summer, right behind Center for the Arts in Maritime Heritage Park!

Aphra Behn’s The Emperor of the Moon is a comical story about a Doctor obsessed with the moon, and his daughter and niece, who, with some help from their well-intentioned but buffoonish servants, try to trick the good-hearted but protective Doctor into allowing them to marry—by passing off their two suitors as lunar royalty, visiting from the moon.

This new adaptation by director Glenn Hergenhahn-Zhao is an outlandish, hysterical, and family-friendly farce playing in the open air in the amphitheater at Maritime Heritage Park.

Performances will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 15–24 at 7:30pm. All six performances take place will be FREE to the public.

ABOUT THE SHOW: CENTER Artistic Director Glenn Apollo Hergenhahn-Zhao’s brand-new translation of this 17th-century farce made its debut as a workshop performance during our New Works Festival in May 2017. The original play was written in 1687 by Aphra Behn, a playwright, author, and spy(!) known as the first professional female writer in England (and perhaps the world).
