Tue, July 30, 2019 @ 6:30 pm8:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, repeating until Tue, August 13, 2019

We would like to introduce you to a friend of ours.

Meet Harold!

A Harold is:

  • An improv long-form created by Del Close Second City & IO
  • According to comedian Mike Myers, the Harold is not just a game, but a way of looking at life
  • The ultimate improvisational experience drawing, upon group process, collaboration, and ritual

The Harold is a long-form improvisation, lasting roughly an hour, in which a team of improvisers creates an entire piece around a single word. It contains scenes, patterns, and monologues exploring themes and ideas generated by that single word. For many improvisers, it is a pinnacle — you must be comfortable enough with scene work that you can follow the organic twists and turns, adding transitions, revisiting some scenes, creating physical patterns—all derived from that initial word. The Harold revolves around the group — not two people in a scene, but the entire group.

This summer, Momentum Improvisation Lab is offering a three-week Harold intensive, giving students the chance to focus on this incredible long-form. If you have previous scene-work experience, you are ready to explore Harolds.

We will learn the components of the classic Harold form (including free association openings, monologues, pattern recognition, edits, entrances & exits). Most of each class will be spent on your feet doing Harolds, but there will be a chance to watch some clips of Harolds on video, allowing us to discuss the form as a group).

The workshop will be facilitated by Oona Cava, who studied Harolds under Randy Dixon, Artistic Director of Unexpected Productions and a protégé of Del Close, creator of The Harold.

Classes will meet for three Tuesdays, July 30th, August 6th, and August 13th, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at CENTER. Tuition is $65. Maximum number for the class is 10 students.

Contact Oona at 360-255-1935 if you have questions or to register!
